This album was entirely made from the voice of Erin Murphy. We custom wrote the reverb, delay, EQ and limiter for this recording rather than taking them off the shelf: every fragment of Erin's voice is given a space of its own.
Erin's notes:
Many voices come with baggage attached. So to be told "whatever sounds you make, that's what we want" is both liberating and terrifying. I decided to go with liberating, and see where that led. I had no idea what was expected of me, except "voice". I do not think of myself as a singer, even though it is the instrument I use most. So a day spent making "noises" was both hilarious and challenging. And then walking away and trusting the rest of the process.
To go from having no idea about anything to an actual album - was the best day. Music in all its forms (except German drinking music) is endlessly fascinating to me. The making, writing, listening - we all create and hear things differently, and take what we need on any given day. This is partly why I find the Celestial Migrant project so interesting - that's exactly what happens with every listening. To know that this project, which started in the world's smallest recording studio, is now going to wander off and transform itself endlessly through the world - that's pretty special to me. And to get to work with the geniuses behind Celestial Migrant, with whom I last worked decades ago - who would've thought.
Celestial Migrant's notes:
When will we come to our senses? How will we come to our senses? Via voice. Somehow sing our senses. Lacking a syrinx, simply a larynx. Will it suffice? Sing into silence. Sense silence, see silence, hear silence, sing. Silence recedes. Silence returns. Silence comes to our senses.
Erin Murphy bio:
Erin has worked as a musician for most of her life. She joined her first choir at age 5, started piano lessons at 6, and eventually graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with a useless piece of paper and interesting friends. She has also worked as a music director, song writer, arranger, conductor, multi-instrumentalist, workshop leader, band member, voice-over artist and actor, mostly in Brisbane, occasionally in Sydney, and now in Tasmania. She has published several books of short songs for choirs, and currently teaches piano, plays mandolin with the Tasmanian Heritage Fiddle Ensemble, and sings with the TSO Chorus. If you ask her, she’ll tell you she’s not a singer. But here we are.
Composed and programmed by Celestial Migrant on the land and waters of the Girai Wurrung people of the Eastern Maar nation. Always was, always will be.
Performed by Celestial Migrant and Erin Murphy.
All voices and singing by Erin Murphy.
